Poetry By Crystal Gibbins

Crystal Gibbins
Crystal Gibbins

Crystal Gibbins is inspired by place and her natural surroundings. The eleven years she lived on Oak Island, in Lake of the Woods, Minnesota, provides her with rich metaphors to use in her writing. She is profoundly influenced by William Stafford's poetry and his approach to writing.
The poet received an M.F.A. in Creative Writing and a Certificate in Publishing at Minnesota State University, Moorhead. She is currently pursuing an M.A. in English Literature & Language at Winona State University in Winona, MN. Her poetry has appeared in Dust & Fire, The Talking Stick, Touchstone, and a number of other literary magazines.

across the alley,
feet slush-puddled in the shiny cool rain,
I peer inside the gray shadow of the neighbors? window?
I am startled by the couple?s embrace,
their slim fingers reaching for the body?s
        most exquisite silk
in that soft exasperating way.
                They are abstract,
        in the blossom flare,
cleaning out their hearts with held-breath
tension. I think they are made
from the emerald bright morning
       or crushed tea leaves
revived in hot water.
Outside I stand, a glass face in the rain,
imagining how it must feel:
the delicate silk blown from the bony clavicle,
white linen wrapped around the tender
curl of wrist,
        my eyes tangled
        in the promise
                of a warm nest.
